What is 420 ?

4:20 or 4/20 refers to consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis drug subculture.

Although there are many explanations for the origin of the term, one stems from a story about a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California in 1971. The teens would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue. The exact time was chosen because that was the time that afternoon detention was dismissed.
At Heritage High School in Littleton, Colorado, there is a "marijuana friendly" after-school program known as "Troop 420". Although extremely controversial, Ken Moritz principal of the high school insisted it promoted school spirit and allows students to share common interests. The term became part of their group's salute, "420 Louis!", and became popularized in the late 1980s by fans of the Grateful Dead. By extension April 20 ("4/20" in U.S. date notation) has evolved into a counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis. In some locations this celebration coincides with Earth Week. In Dunedin, New Zealand, students at the University of Otago and other cannabis law reform activists meet under a walnut tree on the Otago University Union Lawn on Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:20pm to openly smoke cannabis in public in what they consider an 'act of protest'.

  

References in popular culture

  • Phrases such as "420 friendly" sometimes appear in roommate advertisements, indicating that the current occupants are tolerant of cannabis users. That phrase is also used in personal ads to denote the same association.
  • 420 is the title of a comic book series featuring the alternative superhero Captain Cannabis.
  • Noting that "the national weed smoking day is 4/20," rapper Method Man named his 2006 album 4:21... The Day After.
  • In the Futurama episode "The Farnsworth Parabox", one universe, Universe 420, is a hippie universe in which Professor Farnsworth can be seen smoking from a bong.
  • An upcoming episode of Family Guy is named "Episode 420". It is expected to show Brian and Stewie Griffin travelling through the whole USA to legalize the use of pot.

Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.
The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana.
Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
Well, it is now :) ; but that wasn't the origin.

April 20th is Hitler's birthday.
Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

The date of the Columbine school shootings.
This happened after the term was already in use.

4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.
Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.
